Creating a Fence for a Dog

Home » Decks

If you are planning to add a dog to your family, it is important to consider what things your dog will need. A dog needs plenty of room to run, and you are responsible to make sure the dog is kept safe in your yard. A fence is a ideal solution to keep the dog in your yard, and to aid in keeping the neighborhood safe. If you cannot afford to fence in your entire yard, at least consider setting up a dog pen so they have space to play outside, and remain safe from escaping. Here are a few things to consider when creating a space for the dog.

Jumper or climber?

Dogs can dig, jump, and climb to get out of a pen. It is important to make sure you are creating a pen that will be able to prevent them from getting out. A high jumper needs to have a taller fence so they won’t be able to jump out. If you have a dog that digs, you’ll need to dig the fence down into the ground more. Chicken wire can help to keep a digger from getting out of a cage.

Move Plants

If you do not want to have your dog accidentally eating the plants, you’ll need to move those out of the area. Dogs love to eat and chew, so leaving plants is hopeless as they will likely ruin them anyhow. Keep the plants with sharp spikes away from the fencing so they do not accidentally scratch your dog’s eyes. Certain plants can be harmful to the dogs health, read more about these plants to keep your dog from getting hurt or poisoned.

Select a Space

Dogs are known for creating paths in the yard. Dogs love to patrol the perimeter of their home. Look to create a space for your dog that won’t get in your way or ruin the aesthetic mood of your yard. If you end up using a path, you need to consider things that are soft for the feet of the dogs.

Potty Training and Restroom Area

Dogs need to have an area to use the restroom. Training your dog to learn how to eliminate in a certain area can be challenging, but it makes the clean up so much nicer. A cement pad can end up being an easy spot to spray off. However, having a nice grass pad area is softer and less painful on their paws.

Proper Cooling

Utah summers become extremely hot, you need to have an area where they can relax in the cool air. Shade allows you to have a space for your dog to rest and stay out of the sun.

What Type of Fence Should I Consider?

A dog needs to have the right materials used for the fence so they cannot break it. We have multiple fencing solutions for Utah homeowners, here are some of our favorites:

  • Wooden fences
  • Slate fencing
  • Vinyl fencing
  • Chain link fence

When you want to add onto your home and customize it to make it your own, the most popular way to do that is by building a deck for your backyard. Not only will building a deck provide you and your family with a beautiful way to host parties and enjoy the view, but a deck will increase the value of your home. Though the initial cost of building a deck is expensive, it is an investment that you can get back once you sell your home.
If you’re planning to build a deck for your home this summer, there are some things you might want to plan for.

Starting Early on Deck Building Never Hurts
It is a well-known fact that contractors and construction crews are most busy during the warmer months of the year. Deck builders are no different. Though summer is a great time to start your deck building project, you might consider planning well ahead of time so you don’t have to be put on a waiting list.

When you contact a contractor just before spring begins, you can schedule your deck-building project early and get everything in the works so you don’t have to wait.

Choosing a Building Material for Your Deck
There are several options available to you in the way of building materials. First, you could have a traditional wood deck. Though it looks beautiful and old-fashioned once implemented, wood can be slightly more high-maintenance than other types of building materials.

Then there is Trex, which is a composite material that looks like wood but lasts longer and does not require the same level of maintenance.
